Exhibition: Artwork by World War II German Prisoners of War in Aroostook County

Portland, ME: Maine Memory Network is Maine's online digital museum, administered by the Maine Historical Society (MHS) with over 270 Contributing Partner institutions. The Aroostook County Historical and Art Museum in Houlton – a Maine Memory Network Contributing Partner since 2003 – has 717 items and 13 exhibits online. Alongside holding an enormous archive about Aroostook County, their collections house images of POW soldiers and artwork the prisoners created.

These images will be displayed as reproductions in the MHS exhibition Passing the Time: Artwork by World War II German Prisoners of War in Aroostook County. The exhibit will be featured in the Showcase Gallery from August 11 to December 31, 2021.

In 1944, the U.S. Government established Camp Houlton, a prisoner-of-war (POW) internment camp for captured German soldiers during World War II. Many of the prisoners worked on local farms planting and harvesting potatoes. Some created artwork and handicrafts they sold or gave to camp guards. Camp Houlton processed and held about 3,500 prisoners and operated until May 1946.

Hours: Wednesday–Saturday, 10AM – 5:30 through advance ticketing. Walk-ins, via the MHS Museum Store, are subject to availability.
