Description
The Walpole Church, or Old Walpole Meetinghouse, was erected in 1772 in South Bristol through the work of architect and shipwright Samuel Woodward and is one of the oldest churches in Maine still in primitive form. It began as a Presbyterian church to serve the large population of Scotch-Presbyterians in the area and later became a Congregational church. The Pemaquid Chapter of the DAR placed a memorial tablet in front of the building in 1936.
The caption reads, "Walpole Church, built 1772, oldest church in Maine, Walpole, Maine."
The Tichnor Brothers printing company published this type of postcard circa 1938.
