Description
Construction of Hollingsworth & Whitney mill began in 1892. The mill was located on the east side of the Kennebec River in Winslow. The City of Waterville was across the river to the west. This construction is related to a dam to provide hydro-electric power for the mill.
The Hollingsworth & Whitney Mill was later owned by Scott Paper. Today (2012), it is called Kennebec River Development Park and has been re-purposed for large scale storage and small manufacturing businesses.
This photo is looking north on the east bank of the Kennebec River.
The buildings arranged along the opposite bank are the location of the original Colby College campus in Waterville, dating back to around 1818. College Avenue gets its name because of the College's former location. The tall building at the far right, with the dome, was Shannon Observatory, at the north end of the campus. By 1952, all Colby College classes were taking place at the new Colby College on the Mayflower Hill campus.
Today (2012), if you drive up Front Street in Waterville and around the railroad by-pass called Colby Circle, you are passing through and around the grounds of the old campus. The present day Social Security Building and the District Court Building are almost in the center of the former campus. There is a stone marker, entering the by-pass from the south, indicating that area was the site of Colby College.
