Listen to recording

John Bear Mitchell, associate director of the Wabanaki Center at the University of Maine, a member of the Penobscot Nation, also is a storyteller.

Here, he tells "Glooskap, the Great Chief," based on a version of the story printed in More Glooscap Stories: Legends of the Wabanaki Indians by Kay Hill (1970).

Glooskap shaped the world of the Wabanakis and taught them how to use and respect the land and resources around them.
