Description
A quality example of modiste dressmaking skill, this two-piece evening ensemble is made from black tulle fabric, lined in silk, and covered in sequins attached by hand. The pigeon-breasted bodice and a small back bustle create an S-bend profile (pushed out at front and back,) popular in the era. This turn-of-the-century design still required a corset.
Mary King Scrimgeour (1849-1930) owned several pieces, including this one, made by modiste "Dunton Robes of Augusta." Eliza B. Dunton (1852-1922) an Augusta, Maine-based dressmaker was likely the proprietor, although she didn’t officially advertise as Dunton Robes. She operated in Augusta between 1904 and 1907.
