Description
This sales receipt, from the Washington bookseller Pishey Thompson, is for The Writings of Thomas Jefferson, published 1829.
In 1830 William King, Maine's first governor, paid $13 for the three volumes, half-bound in Russia leather. William King was a delegate to the convention that wrote the Constitution of Maine. He attributed his views of education, and indeed Article VIII of the Constitution, to the influence of his friend Thomas Jefferson.
George and John Patten purchased King's personal library at auction in 1852 for $300.
That library became the core collection of the Patten Library Association in Bath. The King library consists of approximately 500 titles, including many classic works in the fields of history, law, biography and travel from the early 19th century.
