Description

Aroostook County's Swedish Colony began in 1870 with the arrival of the first families. Within the first year, these immigrants began organizing from a religious standpoint; they formed an Evangelical Lutheran congregation. Construction of a permanent church began in 1874. The church still stands on what is today Capitol Hill Road.

At the time the picture was taken, the Swedish-born Rev. Zacheus (Zack) Menton was pastor. He had immigrated in 1919 and served a Lutheran congregation in Massachusetts.

New Sweden continues to celebrate its ethnic heritage through its annual Midsommar festival.

The back of the card includes an AZO stamp box that would place its production close to 1940. A publisher is not given.
