Sunbeam II, as seen from the deck of the USLHS Portland, ca. 1930

Contributed by Maine Seacoast Mission

Description

Maine Seacoast Mission's Sunbeam II approached the lightship Portland of the United States Lighthouse Society, a nonprofit dedicated to saving and sharing the rich maritime legacy of American lighthouses.

Lightships were moored in areas dangerous to navigation and equipped with warning lights. One of the Seacoast Mission's most essential services was visiting families who resided on offshore and coastal lights.

Maine Seacoast Mission has been a trusted friend along the Maine coast since 1905. Rooted in a history of compassionate service and mutual trust, the Mission seeks to strengthen coastal and island communities by educating youth, supporting families, and promoting good health.
