G.M. Atwood letter to J.L. Hodsdon about the 24th Maine Regiment, Augusta, 1862

Description

Colonel G.M. Atwood notified Maine Adjutant General John L. Hodsdon of the appointment of Dr. John Colby Manson of Pittsfield as surgeon, and Oakes Fillebrown of Wayne as quartermaster to the 24th Maine Regiment, which Atwood commanded during the Civil War.

Dr. Manson (1831-1885) was the first regular physician to settle in Pittsfield. After the war, in addition to practicing medicine, Manson served as an executive board member at Pittsfield's preparatory school, Maine Central Institute, was a member of the 1873 House of Representatives, and sat on Pittsfield's Board of Selectmen.
