Lucretia Sewall to husband on pregnancy, Portland, 1837

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Lucretia Day Sewall was living in Portland with her parents, Ezekiel and Eunice Day, while she was expecting her first child, and while her husband, Kiah B. Sewall, was in New York City, attempting to establish himself in business and get out of debt.

Without ever mentioning "pregnancy" or "baby," Lucretia Sewall wrote about the walks she took around the garden of the family's home on Elm Street and that she rarely went to bed "without thinking will it may take place to night. Though in the day time I think it will not for a fortnight."

The baby, Eunice Day Sewall, was born on August 20, 1837.

She added, "Of course it occupies the greater portion of my thoughts -- not to your exclusion though."

She wrote that her mother wanted Lucretia to sleep with her; she preferred to sleep alone. "Should there be any necessity, I can easily call her," she wrote.
