Description
Annie Ripley wrote to her friend Martha Usher Osgood on April 10, 1865 about Gen. Robert E. Lee's surrender of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia the day before.
She wrote, "We got the news of Lee's surrender before the cars got out and such a time I never saw in Gorham. They got fairly wide awake."
She wrote about a cannon being fired and bells of all sorts being rung. She then left for Portland and celebrated there as well. She said she heard speeches at City Hall from "Misses Washburne, Webb, Neal, Walker, Bowles, Woodman, &c" as well as music.
She left before the fireworks to return to Gorham.
