Civil War Monument, Presque Isle, 2013

Contributed by Presque Isle Historical Society

Description

Funds with which to build Presque Isle's Civil War monument were raised by ladies of Presque Isle and, in June of 1873, the Selectmen authorized the building of the monument and selected the Fairmount Cemetery as the location. It was built by S.P. Bradbury of Bangor and was erected in 1873. There were a few delays before it was officially dedicated on July 4, 1874.

The dedication ceremony began at 10 a.m. on that day with a mile-long procession of approximately 1,000 people. James Phair, a local Civil War Veteran, served as Marshall of the day. The ceremomy was presided over by Reverend Collamore Purington, who had served in the Civil War as Chaplain of the 7th Regiment.

The monument memorializes those who served in the Civil War and lists the names of 38 of the soldiers from Presque Isle.
