Description
Alexander Currier, a native of Hallowell, a ship carver, draftsman at the Hallowell Granite Company, and later an architect, likely made this watercolor study while working at Merrick & Sons, a metal-working company in Philadelphia that built iron-clad ships.
He also made watercolor studies of "Currier's Shot Proof Fortification and Revolving Dome" and a sectional view of the turret of an ironclad ship.
The study illustrates the design features of the turret, including hinged covers for the gun ports, storage of cannon balls and ramrods, and ventilator tubes.
