Contributed by Mount Desert Island Historical Society

Description

A picture postcard of the Bar Harbor hotel, The Rockaway. This postcard is addressed to Mrs. Ellen S. Hart, Brewer, Maine.

The Rockaway House was located in Bar Harbor on the east of Main Street, alongside the present-day, 2012, Agamont Park. The hotel was built in 1870. In 1881 its proprietor was identified as Tobias L. Roberts. The building was torn down in 1916. The Rockaway was one of many hotels that catered to tourists who fled the hot cities of the mid-Atlantic for the cool air, rugged coastline, and sophisticated cultural atmosphere of Bar Harbor.
