Description
Wells Beach is one of numerous beaches in the town of Wells and attracts many visitors during the summer season. Beginning in the 1890s, after the nearby grand hotels had been destroyed by fires, a cottage boom evolved along the town’s beaches. Many cottages were developed along the waterfront for residents and visitors and often given family, nautical, or Native American names. Cottages were located along both sides of Casino Square at Wells Beach in the early 20th century. This postcard depicts cottages along Wells Beach south of the Island Ledge Casino, which was built by John M. Davis around 1909. Many cottages in the area were destroyed during World War II.
The caption reads, "Cottages along the beach, south of casino, Wells Beach, Maine."
The Tichnor Brothers printing company published this type of postcard circa 1938 as part of their Maine series. These, and other postcards, by the Tichnor Brothers Company are officially known as the Tichnor Gloss Series because the photographs were notoriously retouched on such a level that does not allow the postcards to be classified as photographs or paintings.
