Description
Togus is one of the oldest veterans’ facilities in the United States, having opened in Chelsea, Maine in 1866 as a home for disabled soldiers on the site of a former health summer resort known as Togus Springs. The theatre at the Togus Veterans Administration Facility was part of an expansion of the site in the 1930s. With the advent of the narrow gauge railroad from the Kennebec River and an electric trolley line from August in 1890, Togus became a popular weekend visiting spot, leading to band concerts, a zoo, a hotel, and theater. With funds from the Public Works Administration, the Togus facility underwent expansion in the 1930s under the direction of Malcolm Stoddard. One of the new buildings was the theatre at Togus, constructed in 1937 of reinforced concrete and red brick facing. The theatre brought shows directly from Broadway with profits used to benefit the veterans.
