Description
In the first half of the 20th century, when this postcard was produced, the cities of Saco and Biddeford had thriving textile industries based along the Saco River. The Main Street Bridge connected Biddeford and Saco over the Saco River with mills near the waterfront, including the Pepperell and Laconia Mills in Biddeford and the York Mills in Saco. Nathaniel Currier was a millwright and bridge builder responsible in part for the Main Street bridge, which was built in 1877.
The caption reads, "The Heart of Biddeford and Saco, Maine."
The Tichnor Brothers printing company published this type of postcard circa 1938.
