Description
An arched footbridge in Deering Oaks Park, measuring 40 feet in length, was built in 1911 spanning the Deering Oaks ravine. It cost the city $3,355 and replaced a wooden bridge. Portland also built 8-foot tall lamps on both sides of the bridge made of glass. In 2007, a engineering firm commissioned by the city estimated that cleaning, coating and repairing the bridge would cost $216,000. Repair work on the Arch bridge began in 2010.
The caption reads, "Arch Bridge, Deering Oaks, Portland, Me." This postcard was printed by the Tichnor Brothers printing company and is part of their Maine vacation series, which was printed from 1930-1945 and was meant to promote tourism in Maine.
