Description
The Old Orchard House was distinct as the first of one of many grand hotels that catered to the summer tourist community in Old Orchard Beach throughout the first half of the 20th century. In 1876, Ebenezer Staples contracted George W. Herring to build the hotel on a hill overlooking the beach. The hotel was one of few in Old Orchard Beach to survive a devastating fire in 1907 and went on to attract many visitors, who often took the trolley to nearby Saco and Biddeford. It boasted more than 300 rooms and a boardwalk leading almost up to the beach. The hotel was razed in 1943, at which time the Everett Hotel on Old Orchard Street took up the name of Old Orchard House.
