Description
H. Hamlin sent a telegraph to Lt. Charles Bridges, a Castine native on leave from service as quartermaster of the 8th Infantry Corps d'Afrique in Louisiana. Bridges received the telegraph at Searsport.
The message reads: "Cannot" get "it". H. Hamlin is likely Vice President Hannibal Hamlin. His son Cyrus Hamlin (1839-1867) was the colonel commanding the 8th Infantry Corps d'Afrique.
The subject of the message is not clear but may be related to Bridges' efforts to leave the military because of chronic illness or his desire to get a friend, John C. Phinney of Stockton, transferred to the 8th Infantry Corps d'Afrique.
