Globe Yiddish Theater, Auburn, 1914

Not available for reproduction or licensing. More info.

The Globe Yiddish Theater, a traveling troupe, delivered a taste of big-city Jewish culture to Maine communities.

Jewish immigrants continued to speak Yiddish among themselves even as their children preferred to use English.

The Yiddish on the photograph is translated as: "Reb Hertzele the Aristocrat, Act I. Isaac: Mazel tov! Hertzele’s only son has just become engaged!"
