G.W. Hinckley letter on art donation, Fairfield, 1918

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

George W. Hinckley, founder and general supervisor of the Good Will Home Association of wrote a follow-up letter to one he had written the previous day to Mildred G. Burrage of Kennebunkport, an artist who had sent him a painting entitled "The Maine Coast."

After writing the first letter acknowledging the receipt of the painting and asking if it was a gift, he had received a letter from Burrage stating it was gift and suggesting that "poor pictures be kept in the museum and the best ones distributed on the walls of the cottages."

Hinckley debated the issue of the best location for paintings of importance. He believed that if paintings were not in every-day sight, people would appreciate and study them more -- and not take them for granted.

Burrage had visited the home and school for needy children before sending the painting.
