Description

Samuel L. Carleton, the popular Portland daguerreotypist, made this daguerreotype of a couple seated in formal attire. The leather spine of the case reads "Memorial" embossed in gold.

Achieving a favorable portrait was a hard task for both the artist and the sitter. While the artist was concerned with technical aspects, the sitter tried to look as comfortable and relaxes as possible for the 20 seconds it took to expose a picture.
