Water Street, Lubec, ca. 1920, ca. 1920

Contributed by Lubec Historical Society

Description

This much-reproduced view of Lubec’s main business street is usually seen as a retouched, hand-colored postcard. This postcard uses the original photograph, though reproduced in a grainy manner which obscures much detail. Nevertheless the prosperity of a busy Lubec entering the 1920s is evident with the preponderance of automobiles, though evidence of horse-drawn vehicles can be discerned. Looking west, the building on the extreme left housed the post office for many years and in 2001 became the site of the new Lubec Memorial Library building. The next building on the left, just past School Street and bearing the sign Lubec Drug Store, still exists as of 2010, along with the closest three buildings on the right.
