Description

Josiah Pierce (1827-1913), a native of Gorham who lived in London, kept a copy of a letter he wrote in 1883 to Francis Bennoch, treasurer of the Longfellow Memorial Committee, whose members gave money and verbal support for a bust of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow at Poet's Corner at Westminster Abbey.

Members of the Longfellow family and others were trying to secure for the Maine Historical Society in Portland the letters written by the committee members. The letters had been given to Henry O. Houghton, a publisher from Boston, for safekeeping and Pierce wrote that "Mr. Houghton has strangely misunderstood your delivery of the letters to him for safe-keeping, to be disposed of as the Poet's family might desire ..."

Pierce was assisting the efforts of Anne Longfellow Pierce and other members of the Longfellow family to secure the letters.
