J.E. Mitchell letter to Persis Blanchard, Augusta, 1863

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

James E. "Ned" Mitchell wrote to Persis Blanchard of Cumberland about his activities as sergeant of the 10th/29th Maine Regiment, in Augusta before shipping out to the South.

Mitchell wrote that he was the only officer from Co. C in camp, so he was in charge of the company, distributing clothing and other duties.

He recounted his good service since his enlistment in 1861 and noted that his captain said he "deserved something more than I had got."

He commented on his dislike of Augusta and answered what apparently were Blanchard's questions about a "girl in Falmouth."
