Description
Josiah Pierce (1827-1913), a Portland lawyer, wrote to his parents from New York City about his final preparations in Portland, Boston, Washington, and New York, to leave for St. Petersburg, Russia, and a diplomatic post there.
He describes meetings with various friends and officials, staying at the White House with President and Mrs. Franklin Pierce, distant relatives, and being in New York to prepare to sail to Europe.
