Description
This clear glass bottle is typical of, perhaps, a drugstore's most effective method of advertising. Having a medication bottle molded with the name of the establishment "Swett Druggist" and the location "Bath, ME" guaranteed that the customer wouldn't forget where they had purchased the product. The Swett Drugstore was established by Lewis B. Swett when he was just twenty-five years old. According to Swett's obituary in the "Bath Independent" of August 25, 1921, the Bath native opened his first store on Front Street in 1891, after his 1890 graduation from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy. Swett later opened a branch at the busy Centre and Washington Streets intersection, not a quarter of mile away from his main store. His thirty years in the drugstore business ended suddenly with his death at the age of fifty-five. The Swett Drugstore continued in operation until 1924. This style of medication bottle was popular in the 1920s.
