Samantha Smith, center, 11, of Manchester, at Artek, a Young Pioneer Camp in Gurzuf, Crimea, on the Black Sea.

Smith and her parents, Arthur and Jane Smith, spent two weeks in the Soviet Union as guests of Soviet leader Yuri Andropov after Samantha wrote to him about his intentions concerning war and advocated for peace.

Artek was a camp for elite Soviet youth -- children of Communist Party members and the best students.
