Receipt for Penobscot Expedition service, Falmouth, 1779

Description

A receipt to Capt. John Starbird for partial payment for Josiah Bayley's service in the 1779 Penobscot Expedition in which Americans unsuccessfully attempted to rout the British from Majabigwaduce (Castine).

The British were building a fort at the mouth of the Penobscot River to protect a planned loyalist colony and to facilitate defense and shipping.
