Description
William Reidhead (1757-1811) kept an account, in the middle of a book used for various records, of the Battle of Majabigwaduce from July 24-August 14, 1779.
Reidhead, who came to America from Scotland in 1776, was cooper and storekeeper to the Commissary of the British troops that occupied Majabigwaduce (later Castine).
The Americans launched the Penobscot Expedition to prevent the British from completing a fort at Majabigwaduce and setting up a loyalist colony there. The Americans were defeated in what is often called the worst naval disaster until Pearl Harbor in 1941.
