H.H. Hay building, Portland, ca. 1890

The H.H. Hay "flat iron" building is at the junction of Middle Street and Free Street in Portland.

Known as the lower Hay building, there is a corresponding upper Hay building at the corner of Free and Congress streets. The H.H. Hay apothecary dispensed medicines and flavored syrups for drinks and exported them all over the world during the 19th century.
