Charles Buffum, Orono, 1871

Description

Charles Buffum of Orono was a private in Captain George W. Maxim's Company in the Aroostook War.

Buffum and his brother, Albert C. Buffum, operated a lumber manufacturing firm, A.C. & C. Buffum, at Orono.

In 1868 he ran for and was elected to the Maine House of Representatives and in 1870 and 1871 he was a member of the Senate from Penobscot County, serving as President of that body in 1871.

In 1877, he carried out a survey for the governor to ascertain what islands on the Maine coast belonged to the State, then served as one of the three commissioners charged with determining the legal rights of voters in the Madawaska region.

He was Superintendent of the Reform School for Boys at Cape Elizabeth from 1878-1879.
