Description
PT boats were used by the navy in World War II because they were lighter, smaller and faster than warships, and they could carry large amounts of ammunition for their size. The crew on the PT boats would train at the Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron Training Center in Melville, Rhode Island.
There were typically only 12 or 14 crew members on a PT boat, so unlike larger ships, each crew member needed to be trained on each job on the boat. The PT boats were very successful in the Pacific Ocean in fighting the Japanese.
This photograph shows a PT boat at the training center at Melville. Squadron 4 is sitting on the stern, and in the background, Quonset, Rhode Island, is visible.
This photo belongs to Tom Hurston, who was one of 16,000 men trained for PT boat duty at Melville.
