St. John River near Grand Isle, ca. 1973

Contributed by Acadian Archives

Description

The stretch of the St. John River between Van Buren and Madawaska was one of the earliest areas settled by Acadians who travelled upriver from Fredericton, New Brunswick, in the 1780s. Though much of the region remained agricultural, lumber was floated down the river to sawmills in Van Buren, Maine, and Grand Falls, New Brunswick, beginning in the late nineteenth century.

The postcard shows, on the far side of the river, Sainte-Anne-de-Madawaska, New Brunswick. The villages of Grand Isle and Lille are located behind and to the left of the vantage point, and Upper Keegan, to the right. At center left are a string of small islands leading to the larger Quisibis Island; these were boom piers that facilitated the sorting of Canadian and American lumber. The eastern tip of "La Grande Isle" is seen in the middle of the photograph.

The bilingual description on the back states, "A scenic island in the beautiful valley of the St. John River—Grand Isle, Me.—Living Heritage." It may have been produced on behalf of the Héritage Vivant historical society, which established the Acadian Village in nearby Keegan.

The Yankee Colour Corporation (Southborough, Mass.) published the card in 1973. The photograph was likely taken in the late 1960s or early 1970s.
