Description
The Second Parish Presbyterian Church at the corner of Pearl and Congress streets was built after the Great Portland Fire of 1866. The building was known as the Payson Memorial building.
The church began as the Second parish Congregational Church in 1787 with Elijah Kellogg as pastor. Edward Payson became pastor in 1807, serving until he died in 1827.
The congregation sold the building in 1964 because it could no longer afford the repair and upkeep. The church moved to 32 Neal Street.
