Description
Architecture commission for James P. Baxter at an unknown address, circa 1900. The commission is associated with John Calvin Stevens. This item is part of the Stevens Architects drawings and records collection.
This may possibly have been James Phinney Baxter's summer residence on Mackworth Island. In 1885, James Phinney Baxter bought Mackworth Island and soon built a twenty-two-room summer cottage, designed by the famous Portland architect, John Calvin Stevens. Named Menikoe Cottage after the Wabanaki name for Mackworth Point, it was eventually moved to make room for the second mansion and was finally demolished.

James Phinney Baxter (1831-1921) was among Portland's most prominent citizens, turning to philanthropic causes after his business successes- including the founding of the Portland Packing Company. He championed causes such as the preserving of land to create city parks in Portland, the Maine Historical Society, and sponsored the construction of the Portland Public Library (1889).
