Alexander Scammel Wadsworth, ca. 1820

Description

Alexander Scammel Wadsworth (1790-1851) served in the United States Navy, most notably as a lieutenant aboard the USS "Constitution" during its historic battle with the HMS Guerriere during the War of 1812. He rose to the rank of Commodore during his long naval career. Alexander Scammel Wadsworth was the son of Elizabeth Bartlett and General Peleg Wadsworth, and uncle of the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
