Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Alexander Scammel Wadsworth (1790-1851) was a officer who served for many years in the United States Navy, most notably as a lieutenant aboard the USS Constitution during its historic battle with the HMS Guerriereduring the War of 1812. Commodore Wadsworth was the son of Elizabeth Bartlett and General Peleg Wadsworth, and uncle of the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

This is an early 20th century reproduction photograph of a painting, likely painted when Wadsworth was in his 30s. The location of the original painting is unknown.
