Description
This fashion doll or "fashion baby" with a high waisted gown evoked Empire style fashions, popularized during the French Empire period (1800-1815). Empire style characteristics included a high waist and narrow skirt. The trend overlapped with English Regency styles. This doll also wears a fur collar or shawl, and a poke bonnet, which covers the face. Perhaps the blue ribbons on each arm were meant to resemble long gloves.
While this doll represents turn of the 18th to 19th century fashions, it is unclear when the doll was made, perhaps after 1820. It is one in a set of eight fashion dolls spanning circa 1787 to 1820. The doll was dated "1801" either by its creator or an early collector.
