Construction of Maine Medical Center, Portland, 1954

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

In 1951, Maine General Hospital, Children's Hospital, and Maine Eye and Ear Infirmary merged to form Maine Medical Center. To accommodate the growing hospital, a new building was required. The addition connected to the Private Pavilion, built in 1929, and required the removal of its solarium, as seen here. The hospital's 1951 fundraising brochure outlined its new vision: "The Maine Medical Center has been established to care for the sick and to develop higher standards of hospital and medical service; to educate physicians and nurses and to train technicians and others in the related arts and sciences devoted to the improvement of mankind's health; and to encourage and to conduct medical investigation concerning the causes, treatments, and prevention of disease."
