Description
In 1898 the battleship USS Maine was sent to Cuba to protect American interests in Cuba from the Spanish government. On February 15, 1898 the USS Maine sank as a result of an explosion in a powder magazine resulting in 260 casualties.
"Remember the Maine" became the slogan that propelled the U.S. into war with Spain in 1898.
