Description
Jabez Fox (1705-1755) outlines instructions for his own funeral within his volume of manuscript prayer and religious observations. He instructs the reader to acquire a plain but decent coffin, as well as decent "grave stones set up about my grave." He apparently knows he is about to die, as he indicates he will not live to see his 55th birthday. He died on April 7, 1755 and is buried at Portland's Eastern Cemetery.
Fox was a Falmouth resident, but lived on the 'neck' which became Portland in 1786. He served in many roles during his lifetime including Justice of the Peace, Custom Collector, representative to the General Court, as well as a member of the Governor's Council.
The volume also includes biblical passages, prayers for religious observations (holidays), prayers for occasions such as funerals or baptisms, as well as journal entries and personal affirmations. The contents were compiled over a period of time, although there are no inclusion of dates. The book was passed down to his grand-daughter Sally Fox.
