Medical School of Maine students around a pot-bellied stove. In 1899, Maine General Hospital joined forces with the Medical School of Maine at Bowdoin College in Brunswick to establish an educational collaboration between the school and the hospital. The first two years of education were provided on the Bowdoin College campus, with the final two years of clinical instruction held in Portland on Chadwick Street near Maine General Hospital. The building used still stands and is located next to Maine Medical Center's public parking lot.
