Description

On March 1, 1848, the Cumberland Overseers of the Poor, Sewall Blanchard, Matthias Morton and J.M. Rideout, signed an indenture that placed Samuel Gould Jr. of Cumberland into an apprenticeship with Rufus Porter of North Yarmouth.

Gould was to "faithfully serve said Rufus Porter in all things..." He is described as being someone "who is able of body, but who has no apparent means of support; and who lives idly, and pursues no lawful business." Out of the 11 indenture documents in the Cumberland Overseers of the Poor Collection, this is the only one involving a person over twenty-one years of age.

Chapter CXXII, An Act for ascertaining what shall constitute the legal settlement; and providing for the Relief and Support, Employment and Removal of the Poor, Section 8, of the Maine Statutes, approved March 21, 1821, reads in part: “Be it further enacted, That said Overseers shall have power to set to work, or bind out to service by deed, as aforesaid, for a term not exceeding one whole year at a time, all such persons residing and lawfully settled in their respective towns, or who have no such settlement within this State, married or unmarried, upwards of twenty one years of age, are able of body, but have no visible means of support, who live idly and exercise no ordinary or daily lawful trade or business to get their living by..."

Gould was indentured to Porter for the term of one year because he had no visible means of support, and the twenty-five dollars that Porter was to pay to the Cumberland Overseers was to be applied to the "maintenance of said Samuel Gould Jr. or his family."
