Students in Valentine costumes, Farmington State Normal School, ca. 1922

Contributed by Mantor Library at UMF

Domestic Arts was a popular program for women at F.S.N.S. in the 1920s, which included courses in cooking and sewing. In her class scrapbook, Thelma "Jerry" Lawrence listed Costume Design as one of her favorite courses. Here she is (on the right) with her friend Florence Shaw in dresses decorated with hearts. Themed dances were regularly held at the school, including a special Valentine's Day dance in Merrill Hall, and may have been the occasion for these creative outfits.
