Description
The Saco River boardered by Saco Island on the right and Whites Wharf on the left, named after Capt. Samuel White. A good view of the coal sheds and a barge unloading coal for the mills. In the middle of the river is Cow Island conected by a breakwater to the Biddeford side of the river. In days gone by the river's low ebb allowed residents to cross-over half-way to Cow island and then to the Biddeford side of the river with their cows and animals. A towrope was often used for support by those crossing over the river.
The photo was taken from the 251 foot chimney of the Laconia division of the Pepperell Mfg. Co. on the Saco river.
