Robert M. Mahlman, Lubec, 1890

Contributed by Lubec Historical Society

Description

Dr. Robert Mahlman, son of a Lubec sea captain, attended Colby College before commencing practice in his home town. He married Marietta Mugford in 1903 and they moved into a Victorian style residence at 27 Main Street, still occupied as of 2012 by grandson Robert H. Mahlman and his wife Claudia. Dr. Mahlman died in 1939.

According to a handwritten entry on the rear, this fine “cabinet” photograph was made in "Belfast ME" in 1890. This style of portraiture on heavy card stock, uniformly 4¼x 6½ inches in size, predominated from about 1870 into the 1890s. Though appearing faded, most cabinet prints were made by the albumen process (eggwhite sensitized with silver nitrate) which created a sepia tone. Embossed below the image is text reading, “Tuttle’s Studio, cor. Main & High Sts., Belfast, ME.” The elaborately decocrated rear side indicates that W. C. Tuttle also maintained studios in Winthrop, Castine, Kent’s Hill, and Northport.
