Joshua B. Osgood, 1854


Joshua B. Osgood (1782-1861), a native of Fryeburg, began captaining ships at age 23, then served in the War of 1812 as a brigade major in the 2nd Brigade at Portland.

After the war, he made his fortune in farming and lumbering in Fryeburg. He moved to Portland in 1838, where he was active in civic affairs and became a director of Canal Bank.

His ancestor, Samuel Osgood, was one of the first residents of Fryeburg.

Charles Octavius Cole (1814-1858) painted his portrait in 1854.
