Colson Boat Shop, Lubec, ca. 1978

Contributed by Lubec Historical Society

Ralph S. Colson opened a shop in this building for repair and fabrication of boats. It passed to Colson’s son Herbert Sr. in 1926, sold in 1978 to Al(exander) Dyndiuk, apparently the author of a two-page handwritten unsigned document which details its history. According to Dyndiuk, the original building was the over-water dining room of Hotel Teneco on Campobello Island. When the hotel burned in 1912, this building was bought by Colson. With the sides and roof bradec it was towed across the channel to Lubec, floated onto a platform, and reassembled. During the process the structure was lengthened from 60 to 101 feet. The width is 26 feet, height 17 feet. A panelled apartment creates a second floor at the front of the buiulding. The document inventories a long list of industrial power tools, many of which were subsequently moved to a lumber mill ion South Lubec Road. The building remains in use in 2011, bearing an historical R. S. Colson Boat Works sign.
