Description

William Pierce Stubbs (1842-1909), a native of Bucksport, painted a portrait of the schooner Mexican, which was built in Searsport in 1833, with Captain Smart serving as master and owner.

Stubbs was the son of a sea captain and primarily painted ships' portraits.

The Mexican was a Bangor-to-Boston packet, meaning it carried freight and first class passengers on a regular schedule.

The ship was lost at Squam Bar in Ipswich, Massachusetts, in 1890. It was considered the fastest topsail schooner in Penobscot Bay.
